“Emily’s Box” Statement

The inspiration for Emily’s Box evolved through a series of conversations and research ideas with a close colleague last summer at the Penland School of Crafts. The idea or purpose here was the exploration of textile patterns shifted from a two-dimensional surface to a three-dimensional surface. The rationale of this exercise was to determine if volume, materials and color would vary or alter the visual quality of the overall pattern. As the pattern shifted from a digital printed surface to a hard etched ferrous surface, it was concluded that the loss of color and pattern volume greatly affected the viewer’s perception of the overall value of the pattern.
